Myths about the KNYG Straw – and what’s really behind it
When it comes to reusable stainless steel straws, there are many opinions circulating – and not all of them are true. That's why today we're dispelling the most common myths surrounding our KNYG Straw and showing you what's really behind them.
Myth 1: “The stalk breaks quickly”
Incorrect.
Our KNYG Straw is based on the corrugated tube principle – a technology that has proven itself in industry for decades. It is used where durability and flexibility truly matter – under significantly tougher conditions than those found in everyday life.
The stainless steel used is robust, break-proof, and corrosion-resistant. And because the straw is made entirely of stainless steel, rather than glued or bonded, it remains virtually indefinitely flexible under normal use.
Myth 2: “A stainless steel straw is not sustainable”
Incorrect.
Sustainability isn't measured by whether something is made of metal or bamboo—it's measured by how often you use it. And that's precisely where the strength of the KNYG Straw lies: It's designed to last for many years, if not decades.
A recent life cycle assessment shows that after just 37 uses, the KNYG Straw has already offset its initial climate impact.
So, if you use it regularly, you will not only save thousands of disposable straws over the years, but also a lot of CO₂.
Myth 3: “The paint peels off and is harmful to your health”
Incorrect.
Our colored straws are PVD coated – a high-tech process used in medical technology. This involves vaporizing an extremely thin metal layer under vacuum, which is neither a coating nor a paint in the traditional sense.
This coating is:
-
food safe
-
scratch and abrasion resistant
-
resistant to cleaning agents and dishwashers
Sounds technical? It is. But above all, it means: durable, safe—and simply beautiful.
Myth 4: “Stainless steel tastes metallic”
Incorrect.
Our KNYG Straw is made of 1.4301 stainless steel —a material that has been used in the food industry for decades. It's completely tasteless and won't react with acidic beverages like juice or soda.
If you do notice a metallic taste, it is usually due to:
-
residues of cleaning agents
-
Limescale deposits from very hard water
Tip: Simply clean thoroughly on a regular basis – and the enjoyment remains as it should be: clean and tasty.
Myth 5: “Stainless steel straws are also available from other manufacturers”
Wrong – at least when it comes to flexible stainless steel straws.
We, HalmBrüder GmbH , have developed the KNYG Straw, the first and so far only flexible stainless steel straw.
So what you will find online is either:
-
our official distribution partners
-
or our product under the former name “Turtleneck Straw”
The fact is: The idea, the design, and the technology behind the flexible stainless steel straw come from us – and we are quite proud of that.
Conclusion: Facts instead of platitudes
The KNYG Straw isn't just a fancy gimmick, but a well-thought-out product with true sustainability. Behind every detail lies technology, experience—and the desire to make things better.
Whether you want to reduce your plastic consumption privately or rely on long-lasting solutions as a restaurateur:
The KNYG Straw is the last straw decision you have to make.
